Lockdown not keeping students from lighting up their research

Article by Dr Riaan Combrink

Hanru Muller’s masters topic is focused on luminescent concrete using luminescent aggregate. During the lockdown period he stayed on a farm and used the low light conditions and low light pollution as the ideal environment to conduct some field tests. The images show the implementation of a luminescent road sign, according to road sign design specifications, in an attempt to improve the distance from which road signs will be visible. The intended purpose of this test is to investigate the possibility of implementing luminescent road signs on concrete road side structures such as concrete barriers, etc. The road sign was made from luminescent aggregate, to be used in luminescent concrete, glued to a piece of cardboard. The images show the visibility of the road sign after being briefly charged by a bicycle light.
