Engines do not run without oil. Likewise, the Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University does not run without the women who ensure that every part – academic and administrative – moves smoothly.
As we mark Women’s Day this Saturday, 9 August 2025, we shine a light on the remarkable women among our professional, administrative, and support staff. These behind-the-scenes professionals are essential to the day-to-day functioning and long-term success of the Faculty.
From finance and HR to laboratory coordination, student support, office administration and event logistics – their work powers every corner of our operations. They are the planners, problem-solvers, organisers, communicators, budget-keepers, gatekeepers and people-centred professionals who make things work. Their contribution directly supports the Faculty’s vision: To be the leading Engineering Faculty on the African continent, recognised globally for excellence, innovation and inclusivity in education, research and societal impact.
Prof Celeste Viljoen, Vice-Dean: Teaching and Quality Assurance, shared a message of appreciation, thanking the women for their dedication and professionalism: “You are the friendly faces who guide our students with patience and care. You put in the extra time when needed, and you step up with initiative when challenges arise.”
Prof Viljoen also acknowledged their vital role in keeping the academic engine running – from timetables and teaching venues to exams and administration – all carried out with warmth, care, and efficiency.
Wishing all the women of Stellenbosch University and the wider community a joyful and empowering Women’s Day!
