Introduction

Engineering is an excellent career choice for both men and women. Professional engineers are primarily concerned with the progress of technology through innovation, creativity, and change. Their work requires original thought, discretion, and sound judgement, and usually centres on people, money, and machines. Besides engineers, the Faculty also trains engineering scientists.

The four-year Bachelor of Engineering programmes (BEng) equip students with a broad knowledge base. In the first year all students take the same subjects, whereafter they specialise in the specific programme they are interested in. In the first two years, a foundation is laid in mathematics and the natural and engineering sciences. In the third and fourth years students learn to apply their knowledge in solving technical problems and to develop business opportunities. With the broad knowledge base of the BEng, graduates are equipped for a variety of occupations - both within and outside the engineering industry. As entrepreneurs they often establish and manage their own companies. All the BEng programmes have been accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for registration of graduates as Professional Engineers after the initial engineer-in-training period.

According to the conditions of the Washington Accord, through the Engineering Council of South Africa, the BEng is also recognised in those countries signatory to the Accord, i.e. Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

In addition, Stellenbosch University's engineering degrees generally provide direct admission to the next level of postgraduate study programmes in engineering at international universities. At postgraduate level the Faculty offers a range of programmes ranging from a postgraduate diploma to a Doctorate in Engineering.

All applications for admission to the Faculty of Engineering will be subject to selection according to a selection formula. Prospective new first-year students must write access tests in the following three subjects: (1) Mathematics, (2) Physical Science and (3) Academic Language Proficiency in English or Academic Language Proficiency in Afrikaans. The results of these access tests will be considered in conjunction with school results and other relevant information. Personal interviews may form part of the selection requirements.
