Masters Degree in Engineering Management – a popular choice for both local and international students

Following the overwhelming interest in 2021, more than 80 students enrolled for the first intake in 2022 of the hybrid online Masters Degree in Engineering Management – or the MEM as we like to refer to it.

The MEM degree was specifically designed for early to mid-career engineers and scientists in any field who want to study part-time to excel in their current roles and equip them for their future careers. It is offered as a structured, module-based online hybrid qualification with current students enrolled from across the world, including South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Lesotho, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America (USA).

One of the benefits of the hybrid online delivery mode is that students don’t have to travel to the Stellenbosch University campus. There are ample opportunities for students to connect and network with peers and lecturers through group assignments, regular live webinars and MEM functions (held at a different location every time).

Recently a highly successful MEM breakfast and networking event took place for students in the Gauteng region and another event is planned for the Western Cape in August.

Upcoming Virtual Open Days are held monthly, where prospective applicants can learn more about the MEM programme and get all their questions answered by the academic coordinator, Prof Calie Pistorius, or one of the other lecturers.

The last three virtual Open Days for the year will take place on:

  • Wednesday, 17 August 2022 at 17:30 (SAST)
  • Wednesday, 14 September 2022 at 17:30 (SAST)
  • Wednesday, 12 October 2022 at 17:30 (SAST)

The MEM degree is open for applications for the 2023 intake. Applications close on 31 October 2022 for South African citizens and 30 September 2022 for non-South African citizens.

What do our current MEM students say?

‘Well-designed course’
“As a Senior Industrial Engineer, I find great delight in the MEM programme at Stellenbosch University. The course materials are accurately designed for each module. The lectures are relevant and up to date with the latest global trends. The information is comprehensible to students. I have gained great benefit in the group sessions and webinars where interaction is encouraged. The course material can be downloaded from SUNLearn and I can access it at a convenient time.” – Valencia W, MEM student, 2022

‘Above and beyond expectations’
“I would suggest all engineers enrol for the MEM programme, as the first six months of my studies went above and beyond my expectations. It shed a vast amount of light on the known knowns, known unknowns, unknown knowns, and unknown unknowns, which is very applicable in our engineering field. We are constantly faced with challenges and coming up with new innovative ways to overcome them, provide the best innovative solutions to clients, and manage these new technologies through dynamic and strategic capabilities, focusing on getting the job done.” – Adrian S, MEM student, 2022

‘Best decision’
“I initially hesitated to apply for the MEM programme as I have attended several management courses throughout my career with minimal effect on my career. The idea of committing to two or three years of studies was a big decision to take. I can now attest that it was the best decision I have made, as the studies turned out to be an invaluable experience. Although I have only completed a quarter of the course, I feel I have already learned so much. I have been able to implement the learnings in my work environment immediately, and the learnings have given me confidence and skills to affect change in my work environment. The standards are set high but are not overwhelming. The course’s pacing is pretty much perfect. The hybrid format of the course works brilliantly, allowing me to manage my time. The video lectures and accompanying materials are excellently presented. The MEM course has proven to be informative, practical, and even entertaining at times. The lecturers are knowledgeable and experienced professors willing to meet in person and offer encouragement and guidance where required. Guest lecturers also complement the teaching process, offering a refreshing perspective.”
